Exercise is GREAT……BUT so is REST!
Hello, my name is Shea and I’m addicted to exercise. I love sweating and feeling my body work. At Twisted Bodies, I get even more excited. All of the classes are fun, and I enjoy the group setting. I enjoy the positive atmosphere of people trying to become healthier and happier.
When I first joined, it was summer break and I had a ton of free time, so I took as many classes as I could. I took several classes every morning and every evening. I was just leaving the UNT Rec and thought that the membership fee was a little expensive and I was going to get my money’s worth. Plus as previously mentioned, I have a real love of exercise. The classes were so fun that I didn’t want to slow down or stop. I felt like if I was taking a rest day I was wasting a day. When I started taking several aerial classes back-to-back Khristen would get on to me telling me that I needed to rest, but I thought that obviously I knew better. I knew my own body and what it could handle.
I was wrong.
It wasn’t until after my first year at the studio, when I began teaching yoga, that I realized that I needed to slow down. I stopped taking classes twice a day. I even began to take two days off a week. It seems incredibly obvious now – especially while writing this – but as I took more time to rest I started to break through a plateau. I developed more strength and stamina. It turns out that I wasn’t really listening to my body after all. I was pushing it too hard and not giving it time to recover, not giving myself time to recover. I thought that exercise was how I practiced self-care, but it was slowing down that was good for me.
I see this mistake repeated in others all the time.
I don’t know if this is something that you can tell someone and they will understand or if they have to find out for themselves. I still love to exercise and being active is a huge part of my life, but it’s just a part. It’s ok to take a rest day. Moreover, the classes are not going anywhere, so if you want to take three classes on a certain day just alternate them every other week. Letting exercise FOMO rule your life is kinda silly. We pay to take classes to strengthen our bodies and our minds, not to take so many classes that we exhaust and injure ourselves. Plus with the classes at Twisted Bodies, you’re not just being lead through an exercise class, you are being taught about the body from some really smart ladies! Being so focused on what I could push my body to do prevented me from giving my body what it really needed.
Now I rest.
